By taking a risk and being brave with both colour and texture, you can completely transform your space, and create somewhere that feels like ‘you’.
As any interior designer will tell you, your choice of colour dictates the mood and aesthetic of your home. Whilst texture, on the other hand, adds dimension.
This month’s article, explains how to use colour and texture on the walls of your home to create your perfect space.
1. Dark colours for a cosier space.
Take a risk with colour and create a private space with your personality all over it. Deep hues of grey, black, green, brown, and navy, not only add unusual drama, they also make any room feel cosier. When painted on walls, these colours blur edges to create the illusion of an intimate space, making the room feel warmer and a lot more personal. For smaller spaces, you can still try darker shades (sparingly) on feature walls or smaller pieces of furniture, like a side-table, to act as an anchor.
2. Painted lindcrusta adding texture.
Being extremely tactile and luxurious, textured wall treatments like lincrusta work to create lavishness in the room. The delicate and intricate patterns on lincrusta add visual weight to a room, making a room feel atmospheric and more intimate. When light strikes the textured lincrusta, it creates shadows that can tone down a brightly lit space to add more warmth.
3. Pale neutral tones to keep the space light.
When it comes to timelessness, pale neutral colour palettes are top of our list. These colours attract light from the source and reflect it back into the room - creating a 'double-source' of lighting to make the room feel brighter, open and airy.
4. Adding texture with a dark colour.
It takes courage to make a bold statement in your home, but we know how thrilling it is to create a space that reflects the dynamic part of your personality. Use textured or patterned wallpaper in dark colours to add depth and visual interest to a room, without making the space feel closed in. Adding featured wallpaper or colour can dramatically change how the shape of the room is perceived. It can bring depth, interest and added luxury to otherwise minimalist spaces.
5. Mid and dark tones give the space warmth and depth.
At Coats Interiors, we invite you to take courage and creative expressive spaces in areas that may often be overlooked. Using mid and dark tones on walls can evoke a sense of depth to an otherwise bland interior décor. Even the emptiest spaces can become inviting and thrilling. So, take a risk and don’t be afraid to try a new darker palette.
6. Bolder ceilings reduce visual height.
Because of the way they are built, or converted, flats and houses can sometimes have high, soaring ceilings. This isn’t to everyone’s taste and it can cause the light bulb to be so far up that it doesn’t spread light into the room. One of our favourite ways to reduce this lighting issue, and make the ceiling feel a lot lower and closer to eye level, is to create a feature ceiling using patterned wallpaper. The bolder the better.
